Prime Connection: September

Author: Berry Architecture + Associates

This month we are going to feature a couple of under-construction projects for a change. We often feature new start-ups and project completions, so it’s good to mix it up a bit with some construction photos.

Project Update: Greenbriar Multi-family

A new multi-family development in Calgary is currently under construction. There will be three four-storey residential buildings and a stand-alone community building on this large site. The project will feature a mixture of suite sizes and layouts, plus underground parking and amenities. There will be a total of 200 units over the three buildings, and the community building will feature a fitness room, games area, lounge, and kitchen. Each of the four buildings is currently at a different stage of construction. It’s great to be working with Highstreet Ventures on another vital housing project.

Project Update: Drumheller Stripmall

Another under-construction project that is also progressing well is a new stripmall in Drumheller, AB. Berry Architecture has completed or is currently working on several new commercial developments with Bellco Ltd. in smaller centres in Alberta. For this project, the anchor will be KFC and there will be two other bays that are yet to be determined. It is a real pleasure to work with the Bellco team on these commercial projects. The construction stage is preparation for drywalling.

Welcome Two New Team Members!

Two new team members joined our team in the Red Deer office in August and September. Kirsten Weiss is a sustainability specialist who is helping us strengthen our ability to create regenerative and environmentally feasible projects. She has an Honours Bachelor of Arts and Science Degree, majoring in Environmental Sustainability, and is interested in design, life cycles, and systems to create sustainable buildings.

Dustin Lendvay is a Senior Architectural Technologist and Project Manager with 16 years experience in the architectural industry. He brings an excellent background in a wide range of project types, sizes, and values and has experience with various construction methods and building structures. He will be fulfilling production coordination as well as project management roles.

We are thrilled to welcome both of these folks to our team!

Here are some things we’ve been up to:

On August 26th, Berry Architecture sponsored a hole and sent a team to take part in the Swift Builders’ Annual Ronald MacDonald House Golf Tournament in Calgary. We were excited to support this very worthwhile fundraising event.

George was in the UK from August 29th to September 5th meeting with business contacts in York and our team member in London, Mary Adetayo, as part of our set-up of operations in the UK.

On September 4th, we fielded a team once again for the Red Deer “Chamber Chase”. This year our team theme was the “Berries”: Angela, Sarah, Tracey E., and Shylia were Raspberry, Strawberry, Blueberry, and Blackberry respectively. They did a great job and completed all the challenges, finishing in 6th place. Great job, team!

On September 13th, George rode in the Kootenay Rockies Gran Fondo, created and led by the Cranbrook Sunrise Rotary Club. This 100 mile bike ride raises funds for local charities, including a new hospice for the Cranbrook region. We were a key sponsor of the event.

Did you know?

The oldest known architectural “plans” are approximately 9,000 years old.

Engraved on stones and dated to about 9,000 years ago, the oldest known plans to scale have recently been published in the journal PLOS ONE. They depict gigantic prehistoric structures known as “desert kites” that were designed to trap wild animals and were discovered in the deserts of Jordan and Saudi Arabia. It was on this monolith at the Jordanian site that researchers identified the oldest architectural plan ever discovered.
