Originally, the existing Pleasant Valley Lodge in Athabasca was to undergo a major renovation and addition. However, there were concerns with the site, the building phasing, and the comfort of the senior residents. After further investigation, it was determined that building on a new site would be cost-effective. The new site offers the possibility of a future life-lease development and expansion to the lodge; whereas, the existing site had limited expansion possibilities. The new facility includes 56 suites, commercial kitchen, dining room, various amenity spaces, and a larger administration area. Pleasant Valley Lodge was completed in 2010.
