Seniors’ Community Design

Red Deer, Alberta

This detailed schematic and design development exercise was undertaken to design a highly interactive seniors’ community catering to the needs of active seniors. As well as numerous interior spaces for hobbies and social activities, the grounds were extensively developed with gardens, walking paths, pickle ball courts, and outdoor patios. The floor plan is not the typical double-loaded corridor, but rather creates small social “hubs” for each floor where small gatherings can take place. The main floor amenities take the form of a “street scape” with bistro, hair salon, and social rooms arranged in a main street setting. The bistro is accessible to the community and outdoor amenities are also designed to be shared with the community. Provisions were made to bring specialized services into the building such as physiotherapy, massage therapy, financial services, foot clinic, and day care centre.

The care levels to be provided in this design encompass the full range from fully independent living up to and including a memory care wing, but the concept can be customized to include various types and combinations of Designated Supportive Living levels. There is a mix of single and couple suites arranged over 100 units.
