Kootenay Christian Academy

Cranbrook, British Columbia

Berry Architecture + Associates was engaged by the Kootenay Christian Academy group to provide Architectural consulting services for the development of a schematic design concept for a new Pre-K to Gr. 12 school in Cranbrook, BC. The building will be separated into a main building with an area of 2,500 m2 for Phase 1 and classroom modulars with an area of 1,000 m2 for Phase 2.

The school program area includes Pre-K and Kindergarten, Grades 1-4, Grades 5-7, Grades 10-12, existing (newer) modular, administration suite, learning commons/student services, building support, washrooms, and circulation. The main building will consist of two storeys, including administration and service areas, gymnasium, storage space, washrooms, classrooms, flex space, and mechanical room. The administration suite includes offices, staff room, copy room/workroom, infirmary, and staff washrooms.

The design features a covered entry for protection from the elements, takes advantage of views to the mountains, and captures abundant natural light and space for student services. It was key to provide high-visibility from the administration area to the entrance for security and control of entry. Design challenge was to provide a highly functional and aesthetically appealing facility on a limited budget. At this time, the project remains at the completion of the schematic design phase and would proceed to Design Development upon KCA securing funding.
