Accessibility Addition

Red Deer, Alberta

We were approached by a Red Deer family to design a 1,422 ft2 barrier-free addition to their current family home. The addition/renovation was to be specifically designed to meet the needs of a young child with a serious medical condition which results in significant mobility challenges. Previously, the child’s bed had to be located in the living room, and she had to be carried throughout the home and up and down stairs because the home was not wheelchair accessible. The home also lacked a barrier-free washroom.

Berry Architecture designed a barrier-free addition which includes a bedroom, barrier-free bathroom, living room, therapy room, accessible deck, laundry room, plus a nanny suite, complete with ensuite. The addition is now complete and provides an environment perfectly tailored to meet the needs of the family. It also coordinates seamlessly with the existing home and provides a balanced exterior facade.

We donated our architectural services to assist the family who were struggling to meet the costs of this major renovation project. Sub-trades and suppliers also pitched in with donated materials and reduced rates to make the project happen. It was a great example of the community pulling together to help a family in need. Here is a quote from the client: “It looks amazing and it is truly a life-saving addition for [our child]. We can’t thank you enough for helping us out … [and] making this happen for [our child]. Life is so much easier and a whole lot safer now.”
