The scope of services for this project included prime consulting services to design a Student Lounge to meet the needs of the Students’ Association. The new lounge is located in the space formerly occupied by the Olds College Store on the lower level of the Learning Resource Centre (LRC). Other areas on this level were renovated and reconfigured to accommodate the Olds College Store, Communications Department, and Print Shop. The new student lounge provides beautiful, light-filled places for students to relax and socialize, work in small groups, or study in a quiet setting. There is a kitchenette for student use with microwaves, tea kettles, a sink, and a hydration station. The design theme was “the hive,” which reflects the importance of nature in the agricultural college, as well as the collaborative work environment for students.
The College Store was over-accommodated in its former space and functions much more efficiently in the new area and configuration. New offices, open collaboration space, and a kitchenette were provided for the communications department. The dedicated print room gives them additional storage and layout space.
