Community Planning That Serves Your Community: The Importance of Shared Spaces
Community spaces are the backbone of a thriving community—and they start with the right full-service architectural firm.
The Village of Boyle, AB, needed a community space to serve multiple functions. With the help of Berry’s community centre design services, the building contains a library, senior drop-in centre, council chambers, and more.
Public use of common spaces is vital to the fabric of a community. Spaces that exist outside of work and home, as a third place to seek shelter, recreate, and connect, help communities to thrive and promote both mental and physical health. The right community planning and community centre design services can make all the difference in the day-to-day lives of your people.
Among many other uses, community spaces can:
-
Offer youth and family support
-
Promote health for all ages
-
Contribute to the local economy
-
Provide mental health supports
-
Be a space for emergency response.
Here are some examples of vital community projects that our project managers, designers, and architects in Kelowna, Red Deer, and Cranbrook have had the privilege of working on:
Big Horn Community Centre, Big Horn, AB
The Stoney Tribal Administration was interested in repurposing a vacant administration office after ensuring it was structurally sound. After multiple conversations with the STA, Chief, and Council and input from the community, the Big Horn Community Centre is now a valuable hub for community health, safety, and connection with:
-
Band administration offices
-
A new Elders’ room
-
RCMP community liaison office
-
Various Community Health spaces, such as therapy rooms and a dental suite
-
Rooms for the Daycare Centre and Head Start programs
-
A multi-functional hall in the basement suitable for hosting a variety of community events, wedding rentals, and other large-scale functions.
Boyle Municipal Centre, Boyle, AB
It takes a village…the Village of Boyle, that is. Boyle, AB, needed a community centre that could provide a variety of community services and act as a community hub for its population. The result is a municipal centre created with environmentally responsible materials that can really do it all.
Divided into three distinct spaces, the building contains:
-
Council chambers
-
Administration offices
-
A boardroom
-
Town archives
-
Senior drop-in centre with games room and multipurpose space
-
3,000 ft2 municipal library.
Cranbrook Soccer Dome, Cranbrook, BC
One of the best ways to build confidence, foster relationships, and promote physical and mental well-being in youths is through sport. When the Kootenay East Youth Soccer Association (KEYSA) needed an indoor venue for their soccer program, our full-service architectural firm took on the challenge pro-bono, understanding the vital importance of this kind of facility and giving back to our local organizations.
The air-sprung indoor sports dome has expanded to include a variety of regional sports. This was a new project experience for the Berry team because it is an air-sprung building, which we had not worked with before—the result: a dream venue that will be supporting local sports organizations for years to come.
Don’t just work together—build a relationship. Berry Architecture is a full-service architectural firm backed by 25 years of experience to bring your vision to life. Contact ustoday to get started.
